Football star Gareth Bale brands his heart shaped celebration

Footballer Gareth Bale has realised the importance of brand protection and has filed two trade mark applications in the UK for the marks ELEVEN OF HEARTS (Series of 2) and his iconic heart shaped goal Footballer Gareth Bale has realised the importance of brand protection and has filed two trade mark applications in the UK for the marks ELEVEN OF HEARTS (Series of 2) and his iconic heart shaped goal celebration logo (as shown below):

It looks like he will be launching his own merchandise as he has applied to protect a number of goods including, jewellery, bags and clothing. His UK application was published on 3 May 2013 which would give any rival parties who wish to object until 3 July 2013 (although they can apply for a further month until 3 August 2013).

 

Surprisingly, for a star with such enormous European presence, and especially as he could be enticed away from Spurs to work for another big European club, it seems strange that he has not taken advantage of the Community Trade Mark system. For a few extra hundred pounds, he could have applied for a Community Trade Mark which would have protected his two marks across all 27 countries of the European Community.  We await with interest the progress of his applications.
