What is dyskinetic cerebral palsy

Dyskinetic cerebral palsy is a disorder caused by injury to the basal ganglia or cerebellum before, during or after birth. This usually arises as a result of a delayed delivery and the baby's brain is starved of oxygen. Dyskinetic cerebral palsy is characterised by involuntary movements and spasms due to muscles changing between stiffness (hypertonia) and looseness (hypotonia).

Dyskinetic cerebral palsy signs and symptoms

Dyskinetic cerebral palsy symptoms vary by child. The most common symptoms include:

• Hypertonia –  muscle stiffness
• Hypotonia – loose and floppy muscles
• Poor posture
• Uncontrolled movements and spasms
• Lack of facial muscle control leading to grimacing and drooling
• Sustained and repetitive movement

Types of dyskinetic cerebral palsy

There are three types of dyskinetic cerebral palsy:

• Dystonic – slow twisting and repetitive movements of the torso, arms or legs
• Athetoid – slow, writhing, involuntary movement that often affects the fingers and face
• Choreoathetoid – irregular, involuntary movement that can various parts of the body
