Today the Parental Leave (EU Directive) Regulations 2013 come into force extending qualifying employees' (those who have been employed for at least one year and have, or expect to have, responsibility for a child) entitlement to unpaid parental leave from 13 weeks to 18 weeks per child.

By way of a reminder, parental leave can be taken at any time before the child's fifth birthday; before the fifth anniversary of the date of placement in the case of an adopted child; and in the case of a child entitled to a disability living allowance before the child's 18th birthday. The employee also has the right to return to the same job or, in certain cases, a suitable alternative job after the expiry of the parental leave.
