National Apprenticeship Week - new guide for employers

Apprenticeships have been a hot topic in the press recently. Last week, the National Audit Office published its Assessment of Adult Apprenticeships, which showed that the Government's apprenticeships Apprenticeships have been a hot topic in the press recently. Last week, the National Audit Office published its Assessment of Adult Apprenticeships, which showed that the Government's apprenticeships programme continues to be highly valued by apprentices and businesses. This week is also National Apprenticeship Week, which aims to raise the profile of apprenticeships and, to coincide with this, the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) has launched a new guide, Apprenticeships that Work.

The guide offers practical advice to members, HR professionals and employers on how to develop and run high-quality apprenticeships to ensure that the apprenticeship serves both the needs of the company and its employees. The guidance is aimed at employers who either want to offer an apprenticeship scheme or improve their current scheme.

Representatives from companies, such as Rolls Royce, Siemens and Marks and Spencer have worked with CIPD to develop the guidance, which has been welcomed by the London Chamber of Commerce and the Government. It has been the Government's policy to encourage more employers to offer apprenticeships and, according to the CIPD, about a third of employers surveyed currently offer apprenticeships. Employers that do not offer apprenticeships say that they do not believe that apprenticeships are right for their organisation.

Apprenticeships that Work aims to show employers of all sectors and sizes how they can make apprenticeships work for them.  The guide provides:

• advice on practical steps on how to set up a successful apprenticeship programme;
• information on funding, training providers and employment law issues;
• best practice case studies advice on managing and supporting apprentices; and
• information on the benefits of an apprenticeship programme for the business.

CIPD has warned that training quality must be as important as quantity for an apprenticeship scheme to be a success.   It has advised that apprenticeships should be embedded in workforce planning, the individual’s role must be clear, and employers need to secure the support of the existing workforce, both senior management and line mangers, and trade unions.  The guide therefore provides employers with useful advice and support to help tailor apprenticeships to the needs of the business.  

Finally, while a number of sectors offer apprenticeship schemes, retail apprenticeships often attract the most publicity.
