Government ‘likely to explore charging sector for the Charity Commission’

Ben Harrison of Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport reports that following publication of the Charity Commission's statement of strategic intent, the next step is to secure a sustainable financial future for the regulator to include a consultation on charging.

Budget 2018

Announcements include plans to:

  • increase the upper tax free limit for trading by charities from £5,000 to £8,000 where turnover is under £20,000, and from £50,000 to £80,000 where turnover exceeds £200,000

  • allow charity shops using the Retail Gift Aid Scheme to send letters to donors every three years when their goods raise less than £20 a year

  • increase the individual donation limit under the Gift Aid Small Donations Scheme to £3HM Treasury
