Switzerland Coach Crash

21/09/2015
A coach carrying British tourists was recently involved in an accident on the A2, just outside Lucerne in Switzerland. The coach had been returning to Wales after an extended tour of Lake Como and the surrounding area in Italy, when it was involved in a collision with four other lorries. It is understood that the accident happened when a lorry ran into the stationary coach on the motorway. A further three lorries were then also caught up in the collision.  More than 40 people were injured in the crash, although none of the injuries are said to be life-threatening.

Rachael Tucker, a solicitor with Fieldfisher who specialises in international personal injury, says "This must have been a terrifying incident for everyone involved and we wish all those injured a speedy recovery. Accidents such as these are traumatic enough when they happen in your own country, let alone when you are in an unfamiliar country and especially if you do not speak the local language and so we hope that those involved received the treatment they needed from local hospitals and the support required from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

What is good to see is that representatives from the coach company (Edwards Coaches) seem to have been on hand in Switzerland quickly in order to support those involved, as all too frequently individuals can be left isolated in situations such as this.

The local authorities must investigate how this happened quickly and comprehensively to see what factors could have caused this accident. If the coach was stationary why did the lorry crash into it and could this have been avoided? Were the rules of the road being followed? Given the size and scale of the accident and the vehicles involved it is important that they get to the root of the matter and take measures to ensure this doesn't happen again."
