Help for the victims of asbestos in Essex

08/06/2007

In Essex there have been thousands of deaths resulting from asbestos exposure, with coroners in the area recording many verdicts of death due to asbestos disease.

Workers in Essex, from laggers and factory workers to electrical engineers and dockyard workers, have suffered from asbestos diseases. The perception however that this disease is strictly “blue collar” is incorrect, with victims including doctors, teachers and even adults who were exposed to asbestos as children. The symptoms can remain hidden up to 50 years after asbestos dust was inhaled.

Governments and the industry have been aware of the dangers of inhaling asbestos fibres since the early 1930s. Companies which failed to address these issues are often liable to compensate victims of asbestos disease and their families.

Asbestos has a high-profile in the news, from the illegal dumping and fly tipping of it to the inadequate compensation claims and the lack of corporate responsibility. There are over 1800 deaths per year resulting from asbestos related diseases.

Asbestos Aid is a free service run by law firm Fieldfisher, designed to help the victims and families of asbestos related disease. It provides free advice on compensation issues, social security benefits, and government compensation schemes. Asbestos Aid aims to encourage awareness, campaign for reforms in the law, fund medical research and provide help and assistance to asbestos victims and their families.
