£1m in claims against Yorkshire surgeon

Medical neglingence claims against a Yorkshire surgeon have resulted in more than £1 million been paid to victims.

The Yorkshire Post reported that Rotherham Hospital paid £1,010,250 in compensation to ten patients of orthopaedic surgeon Manjit Bhamra.

The hospital admitted liability and negligence in the majority of cases and payments paid to individuals range from £1,750 up to £500,000.  

There are a further three claims pending and eighty five other victims are taking legal advice.

The vast majority of people seeking legal advice were operated on by Mr. Bhamra during the years 2005 and 2007. Since early 2008 the surgeon has been working for the Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust where he has been given a full vote of confidence from officials.

A spokesperson from Mid Yorkshire Hospitals, stated that all surgeons including Mr. Bhamra were routinely monitored, adding that the Trust had no concerns about the surgeons medical practice.
