Six figure settlement for bereaved son, plus £12,500 for St Barnabas Hospice

Paul's father, Mr Alan Griffiths was exposed to asbestos whilst working for Fassnidge Son & Norris in the 1950s. Part of his job involved mixing pure asbestos powder with water to create lagging paste.

Alan said:

''I would pick up handfuls of asbestos mixture out of a bag, using my bare hands…the plumber himself did not do it, it was too much of a dirty job for him'.

Alan was also significantly exposed to asbestos whilst working for a company called L & J Blackman. Throughout his employment, he would replace and renew asbestos guttering in Arborfield Army Camp. Most guttering jobs often took years at a time to complete.

Alan was diagnosed with mesothelioma, an asbestos related disease, in September 2014. Following his diagnosis, he instructed Fieldfishers to deal with his claim. Andrew Morgan, a specialist mesothelioma lawyer and partner at the firm, took on the case. Although the exposure was so long ago and the employer was no longer trading, Andrew was able to trace an insurer and to make a claim.

In the very early stages, Andrew obtained a substantial interim payment of for Alan. Sadly, Alan passed away before his case was settled and Andrew continued the claim on the behalf of Alan's son, Paul, and his family.

Because of his illness Alan wanted to leave his home and move into new premises with his family. He took out a substantial loan to finance the move. Andrew sought to recover the hefty loan interest as part of the claim. The Defendant's resisted this. On Andrew's advice Paul made on "offer to settle" and threatened to issue court proceedings if the Defendants did not accept the offer.

As a result the claim settled and this included £12,533.20 for St Barnabas, the hospice that provided care for Alan before he passed away.

Paul said:

''My dad would have been over the moon at what you have achieved for him and we are particularly pleased that you did so well for St Barnabas…I've never had any dealings with the legal profession…it has been much appreciated the time and effort taken to explain the process, casting some light when things have seemed awfully dark''.
