She was starved of oxygen and suffered a significant brain injury as a result of medical mistakes made at Addenbrooke's Hospital. She has been diagnosed with cerebral palsy. The hospital accepted full responsibility for her brain injury after the claim was put to them.
The child, who cannot be named for legal reasons, needs constant care and will continue to do so for the rest of her life. She will never be able to live independently.
Cambridge University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust agreed to pay a lump sum of £3.5 million together with annual payments of £73,753 rising to £141,000 once the child reaches age 19.
The compensation will go towards paying for the care, therapies and equipment the child will need on an on-going basis throughout her life to give her the best opportunity to have a good life. It will enable her to move to a specially adapted home with her family. She will not be able to work and the compensation includes money for her lost earnings.
The settlement terms were approved by Mr Justice Foskett who also recognised the dedication that had been shown to the child by her family.
