Fieldfisher launches new financial services advisory firm

United Kingdom

European law firm, Fieldfisher LLP, has announced the launch of its new financial services advisory firm, Fieldfisher Capital LLP.

The new firm’s offering, based on a three-pillared approach centred on structuring, advisory and technology solutions to banks, corporates and institutional investors, focuses on complex transactions and high-end advisory work in risk and capital.

Led by former Citibank Managing Director and Structurer, Haseeb Haque, Fieldfisher Capital is sponsored within Fieldfisher by co-head of Financial Services, Guy Usher, and Managing Partner, Michael Chissick.

Although officially launched in February 2021, Haque joined Fieldfisher Consulting (as it was then) in January 2017 and has been successfully securing advisory mandates on emerging markets transactions with a focus on Africa, Middle East and Pakistan. Former colleagues from Citigroup, Ashwani Roy and Amin Manekia, recently joined Haque and the firm has an advisor operating in mainland China.

Roy worked as Director and Structurer and as interest rate and credit quantitative at Citi and has expertise in AI, machine learning and quantitative finance. Manekia was the Managing Director at Citi where he was more recently responsible for Corporate Banking business across sub-Sahara Africa before moving to Ecobank to head the Corporate and Investment Bank in 2016. During his 30 plus years of banking, Manekia has led a large number of financing and other innovative transactions in Africa. In order to expand its structuring and advisory effort, the firm has also acquired the ability to offer services under an FCA regulatory umbrella.

"One of the major benefits of Fieldfisher Capital is working closely with Fieldfisher LLP's market leading financial markets practice," said Haque. "I have come to realise that lawyers, with an eye for detail and exposure to a wide variety of transactions working with different financial institutions, develop exceptional structuring skills.

"Leveraging this skill set enables us to offer differentiated services to our clients with high levels of expertise, in addition to a law firm brand and a robust infrastructure."

Haque added that bringing Roy into the business was a transformative step. "Ashwani's expertise enables us to do complex financial and risk modelling. We have already secured several mandates on LIBOR transition that we would not have secured but for his expertise," he added.

"Amin on the other hand, brings in extensive expertise in credit and structuring solutions for corporates, governments and sovereign owned entities."

Commenting on joining Fieldfisher Capital, Roy said, "I felt the time was right to really push out the business that Haseeb has been quietly conducting for a while. We now have a team which gives us a broader skill set and deeper geographical reach, which is critical when advising on complex mandates in multiple jurisdictions."

Fieldfisher LLP's co-head of Financial Services, Guy Usher said: "Fieldfisher has always been an innovative firm and Haseeb identified an opportunity for a law firm to provide efficient and effective solutions in the regulated, complex and sophisticated financial products, we were working in.

"We now have a highly experienced team of financial services professionals to provide innovative financing and structuring solutions across the balance sheet to banks, institutional investors and corporates. Fieldfisher Capital's structuring and risk-modelling capabilities, combined with the resources of a leading European law firm provides a compelling value add for our clients."

Fieldfisher Managing Partner, Michael Chissick, commented, "We are delighted to be able to launch yet another new business broadening out our services beyond law but leveraging the law firm expertise. We have a great team of highly experienced banking professionals and I have no doubt it will go from strength to strength."
