European law firm Fieldfisher has hired top-ranked energy lawyer Shane De Beer.

Shane is currently a partner at Dechert, having joined the firm in May 2009 from Chadbourne & Parke, where he worked from 1997 and made partner in 2001. A fluent Russian speaker, Shane has a focus on Russia, the CIS and the Middle East, and has over twenty years' experience in complex international energy and M&A transactions, while also advising on regulatory and contentious matters. He speaks Russian fluently and is well regarded for his expertise in Russian law, and split his time at Dechert between the firm's London and Moscow offices.

Shane adds to the firm's 20+ fluent Russian speakers, and will be a key player in the firm's dedicated Russia and CIS Group – which is the largest in the City with over fifty lawyers focused on the region.

The move follows on from the publication of a report, by Deacon Search, that showed Fieldfisher to be London's second biggest lateral partner hirer in 2016.

Shane began his career at Baker Botts in Houston, Texas, and is admitted in Texas, the District of Columbia and in California, as well as in England & Wales. While Shane's major focus is on advising energy companies, investors and lenders, he also advises clients on projects, construction, real estate and general corporate and commercial matters.

Dominic Gurney-Champion, corporate partner and co-head of Fieldfisher's Energy & Natural Resources Group, said: "Shane's experience is second to none, and he is rightly regarded as a leading partner for energy matters in Russia and Eastern Europe. He is immersed in the sector, and as such will be a fine asset for the group and the firm as a whole."

Shane said: "Fieldfisher made a commitment to the energy sector when it revamped its strategy last year and the firm's Energy & Natural Resources Group is growing fast, as is the firm's European footprint. This is an exciting time to be joining and I'm looking forward to making the move."

Arik Aslanyan, who heads the firm's Russia & CIS Group, said: "Shane's experience in complex, international, energy M&A transactions is exceptional - and he is sure to be an asset to the group as we look to grow in this space."

Shane is top-ranked for energy work by Chambers Europe and Chambers Global, and is listed as a leading individual by Legal 500.

Fieldfisher's Energy & Natural Resources Group consists of more than a hundred lawyers, a number of whom have worked in-house for major energy companies or for regulators. The group advises super-majors, national oil companies, small and mid-sized operators and financial institutions, providing clear, focused, commercial advice wherever they operate internationally.
