£200,000 recovered for young woman given unnecessary cardiac treatment at Glenfield Hospital

Iona Meeres-Young was instructed by Sarah Miller, a young woman, in respect of the poor management of her heart palpitations at Glenfield Hospital, near Leicester. The Defendant (University of Leicester Hospitals NHS Trust) misdiagnosed atrial tachycardia and performed an ablation where radiofrequency energy (similar to microwave heat) destroys a small area of heart tissue that is causing rapid and irregular heartbeats.

In fact, Sarah was suffering with sinus tachycardia, a benign symptom of stress and anxiety. She should have been referred for psychological support and certainly did not require any cardiac treatment whatsoever.

During the unnecessary treatment, the Defendant ablated her sinus node, the heart's "natural pacemaker".  As a consequence, Sarah, only in her early twenties, had to have a mechanical pacemaker fitted. She continued to suffer further complications and this unnecessary cardiac treatment has marred the past decade of her life.  She has struggled to care for her disabled daughter and her teaching career has been derailed by her ongoing ill health.

Sarah's case settled at mediation for £200,000.

Client comment:

"I am really pleased with the result, I really can’t thank you enough for sticking with me through thick and thin in order to see this through.  At last I can move on to a new chapter of my life, secure Chloe’s future as best as possible and put this all in the past."
