Sheila McClelland appointed permanent CEO of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland

Ms Sheila McClelland has been appointed permanent Chief Executive Officer, ("CEO") of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland ("NMBI"), effective from 14 January 2022.

The President of the NMBI, Ms Essene Cassidy announced the appointment and praised Ms McClelland for her "solid leadership" in the modernisation of the NMBI throughout the last two and a half years.

Interim to Permanent CEO

Ms McClelland was appointed as interim CEO of the NMBI in June 2019.

During her time as interim CEO, Ms McClelland led the NMBI through a modernisation programme, to include the roll out of MyNMBI (digital platform designed to streamline and improve processes for registrants and stakeholders) together with the digitisation of the Fitness to Practise processes. Ms McClelland also guided the NMBI through the challenges of the global pandemic.

Expertise and Experience

Ms McClelland has held a number of senior positions in Northern Ireland, including Chief Executive of Carrickfergus Borough Council. She has also served as a member of the Board of Cooperation Ireland since June 2017, sits on the Board of the Community Relations Council for Northern Ireland and is Chair of the Consumer Council for Northern Ireland

The term of Ms McClelland's appointment as permanent CEO will run for five years until 2027.
