I studied law at Cambridge University before being called to the Bar in 1991. I developed a broad common law practice including personal injury, family and landlord & tenant law before moving into healthcare regulation.  In 2004 I was appointed as a Case Examiner at the General Medical Council before working for the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) in a number of senior legal and executive roles, including working with the Department of Health and Social Care and the Law Commission on legislative reform.

In 2017 I became the NMC's first General Counsel, dealing with litigation and public law issues and, most recently, their response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
