Asbestos Free Europe: The EU's new asbestos strategy

On 28 September 2022, the European Commission introduced a new strategy to better protect people from asbestos and to ensure an asbestos-free future.

As part of this strategy the Commission proposed a revision of the EU's Asbestos at Work Directive which would significantly lower the occupational exposure limit to asbestos. This would better protect people from asbestos in the workplace and is in keeping with the central message that prevention is more effective than treatment. The strategy forms part of the EU's Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan.

The reduction in the legal exposure limit is among other very welcome measures including an awareness raising campaign on the safe removal of asbestos.  We hope to see UK legislation following suit in the near future to ensure a truly #AsbestosFreeEurope.
