Mr Vaz, who specialises in international competition law, large-scale corporate and financial investigations and regulatory supervision, strengthens Fieldfisher's Regulatory team by bringing specific financial services sector competition and regulatory experience to the firm.

"Miguel joins us at a critical juncture for the Regulatory team and for the firm," said John Cassels, Co-Head of Fieldfisher's Regulatory Group. "Miguel not only strengthens our competition and financial services offering in the Regulatory team, but also brings great deal of experience to Fieldfisher's investigations practice areas.

He also worked for international investment banks on several high-profile multijurisdictional financial investigations and regulatory/supervisory remediations.

Mr Cassels continued, "In addition to the work Miguel will undertake in investigations, he is also looking to expand our M&A reach and build our capabilities in Merger Arbitrage. Miguel will be leading Fieldfisher’s merger arbitrage desk, where he will leverage on his vast experience working closely with leading global hedge funds, private equity and other investment firms on merger arbitrage opportunities across the globe."

Mr Vaz regularly advises multinationals, corporates and financial institutions on merger filings and other competition aspects of mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures, strategic alliances and restructurings. He has been involved in complex multijurisdictional merger control cases including EDF/Cheung Kong, UPS/TNT, Deutsche Börse/NYSE and LSE/Refinitiv.

Before joining Fieldfisher, Mr Vaz worked in key competition law roles at two leading financial institutions in London. Prior to BNY Mellon, Mr Vaz was Standard Chartered Bank’s sole Global Senior Counsel for Competition & Antitrust and a member of the Government Investigations team based in London. Before moving in-house, Mr Vaz worked at two international law firms, Bingham McCutchen and Baker & McKenzie, where he was an Associate in the EU, Competition and Trade team in London. Speaking of his move to Fieldfisher, Mr Vaz said, "Fieldfisher's Regulatory team is highly respected in a number of industry sectors and my role is to extend its sterling work into financial services and other corporate clients in the fields of competition law and government, regulatory and supervisory investigations. I will also be focusing on strategic global regulatory themes including governance/senior manager accountability issues, sustainability and green finance, governance and culture and regulatory change trends impacting business models, products and processes.
