Jon and Matt's Story
David Kaluwahandi, Dispute Resolution Associate in Birmingham, represented Jon and his family in a social care dispute against their local authority. For years, Jon had been cared for by his parents without any support from the state. In 2018, Jon's father became critically ill, ending up in intensive care. The family turned to their local authority for support but were refused any help.
Matt, Jon's brother was forced to take six months unpaid leave to help care for his brother whilst his father remained fighting for his life in hospital. Six months with no support in place and at risk of losing his job, Matt turned to David for help who challenged the local authority and won. A fundamental right was enforced and Jon received funding for carers, giving the entire family much-needed stability and independence.
Support via this clinic provides much needed additional resource to our legal team. This enables us to support more families who are often grappling with complex and urgent situations on their own. The volunteers at Fieldfisher are extremely committed to the clients they support and this shows in the outstanding results they have achieved.
I felt understood. I felt my views were heard… I felt terrified yet supported by those around me… I had a voice in the mightiest court in the land.
I know for a fact that had you not been involved with the case, I would have had to return to work with no resolution for my brother's care needs.
