Alex Watson, Director, Employment and Pensions

Alex Watson, Director, Employment and Pensions, Fieldfisher

I am a Director in Fieldfisher's EPIC (Employment, Pensions, Immigration and Compliance) team, based in our Manchester office.  I specialise in contentious employment work, managing risk in employment relations and I regularly appear in the Employment Tribunal on behalf of employers.

Over the past decade I have gained expertise advising employers across all areas of employment law in a variety of sectors and transactions, including; multimillion pound restructures, outsourcing arrangements, employment and employee engagement strategies, international structuring (including TUPE considerations), employment aspects of corporate acquisitions and disposals and employee relations advice (including dismissal procedures, managing grievances, whistleblowing and safeguarding issues, redundancy processes, board and senior executive disputes and restrictive covenant enforcement).

I have particular experience and expertise in advising logistics and supply chain businesses, manufacturing, food manufacture and retail, and sports law.

I take pride in providing practical "no nonsense" strategic advice, understanding clients' objectives and taking a collaborative approach to achieve the desired outcomes. My objective is to be considered a key part of a client's team – not just another external lawyer.

I am particularly proud to have been described by a client as giving "the most commercial legal advice" they had ever received!

Described as: "responsive, technically astute and highly commercial advice"

My experience in the supply chain sectors has involved me working with large multinational logistics providers in haulage and transport, storage and warehousing, production and packaging enterprises. This knowledge has naturally led to specialist knowledge of food production and food retail logistics.

I also act for a number of sporting bodies and organisations with a particular specialism in football – advising a number of Premier League and Championship football clubs in relation to player and coaching staff, and regularly advise professional sportsmen and women. I am a member of the Employment Lawyers Association (ELA)

In my spare time, I enjoy getting out on my road bike or following my true passion – Leicester City F.C

Key Achievements

  • For a multinational food production company, I provided strategic advice on the relocation of its national warehousing facilities and the incorporation of automation, resulting in employment cost savings in excess of £3million to the client and minimising disruption to the business.
  • When working with a US multinational clothing manufacturer and distributer I advised and assisted with its acquisition of a number of UK and European businesses, providing high level advice on European TUPE obligations. This assisted the company in closing a number of worldwide deals simultaneously, within the project's proposed timescales, and enabled the company to establish a UK market presence.
