Stephen May, Director, Dispute Resolution
I am a director in the dispute resolution team. I advise across a broad range of complex commercial disputes with a particular focus on international arbitration and cross-border litigation.
My practice incudes contractual claims, construction and engineering disputes, commercial agency and distribution, fraud and investigations, and litigation arising out of employment relationships.
I am also a member of our specialist team which handles 'follow-on' damages litigation arising out of competition law infringements within the UK and across the European Union.
I represent UK and international businesses across a range of sectors with a particular focus on manufacturing, energy & infrastructure, engineering, automotive, healthcare and food.
I conduct cases in international arbitrations under the major institutional rules (such as ICC, LCIA, and UNCITRAL) and in domestic "ad hoc" arbitrations, as well as litigation in all the divisions of the High Court, the Court of Appeal and in the UK Competition Appeal Tribunal.
I always endeavour to achieve my client’s objectives in a dispute through a negotiated solution and have experience of all the main forms of alternative dispute resolution including mediation, adjudication and expert determination.
The majority of my cases involve a cross-border dimension, with my current or recent experience including disputes involving parties in Canada, Denmark, Germany, Israel, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Serbia, Spain and the USA. I also have extensive experience managing enforcement proceedings in overseas jurisdictions on behalf of successful clients.
I enjoy working closely with my clients to resolve their disputes and see myself as part of their team.
In doing so, I have been recommended by clients in the legal directories as “diligent, attentive and responsive” and as a "committed, sensible lawyer, with good practical commercial experience". I was also identified as a 'next generation lawyer' to watch in the most recent edition of Legal 500.
