Christopher Eastham, Director, Technology, Outsourcing and Privacy, Fieldfisher

I'm an expert in negotiating complex commercial, technology, and telecoms contracts—especially for business critical systems and functions—with in-depth experience of AI, automation, robotics, AR/VR, and other emerging technologies.

Enabling my clients to achieve their strategic objectives, particularly when they involve harnessing new technology or business transformation programmes, is my highest priority. My clients trust me to provide commercial and pragmatic legal solutions using my market-leading expertise working for both customers and vendors. I've also been independently rated as a stand-out lawyer by Acritas Stars and Legal 500.

I am proud to lead the firm's pro-bono advocacy programme supporting the National Deaf Children's Society to ensure deaf young people get the support they need.

Emerging Technologies:

  • I supported a 'Big Four' professional service firms to develop its artificial intelligence strategy and deliver the strategy by developing, buying, and implementing robotic process automation and machine learning solutions.

  • I advised a global managed service provider on its $10m development and deployment of an advanced search-and-match platform for talent management based on machine learning.

  • I acted for a developer of cutting-edge chatbot technology on structuring its agency and distribution arrangements in the UK and the US.

  • I negotiated a strategic commercial partnership with a global decorative paints manufacturer for the development of cutting-edge mobile augmented reality technology.

Telecommunications:

  • I negotiated strategic network sharing arrangements across Central Asia for voice and data transmission via 2G, 3G, and 4G spectrum, and interconnection with mobile operator core networks for an international mobile telecommunications company. My deep understanding of the technologies on which telecommunications networks are built, and my ability to communicate effectively with technical experts, was indispensable to achieving success for the client.

  • I led the legal workstream for the development and launch of the ground-breaking 'Freeview Play' television platform.

  • I advised a mobile virtual network operator on the regulatory implications of 'over the top' internet television broadcasting, and on the regulatory and licensing requirements for the development and testing of a new 4G network.

Outsourcing:

  • I advised a globally-recognised defence contractor in relation to the UK's nuclear submarine programme.

  • I supported a systems integrator in its £20 million software and services contract to enable a national utilities provider to meet its obligations under a UK government mandated scheme to install 53 million smart meters across England, Scotland and Wales by 2020.

I hold a first class Master's degree in Physics with Space Science and Technology (MPhys), and a first class Bachelor's degree in Law (LLB).
