Michael Butterworth, Senior Associate - Technology, Outsourcing and Privacy, Fieldfisher

I am a Senior Associate in the Technology, Outsourcing and Privacy group with broad experience drafting and negotiating IT and outsourcing agreements.

I specialise in technology law, including IT and business process outsourcings, issues arising from emerging technologies (including artificial intelligence), cloud services agreements, technology and software procurement, managed exits and renegotiations of distressed IT projects, e-commerce and privacy.

I advise technology acquirers and vendors across a wide range of industry sectors, including financial services, technology, telecommunications, consumer goods and travel and leisure sectors.

I have gained in-house experience on secondment at a major international bank and I hold a Practitioner’s Certificate in Data Protection from BCS, the Chartered Institute of IT.

I sit on the Tech Law Futures committee of the Society for Computers and Law magazine, and I am a regular contributor to the SCL magazine and speaker at SCL events. I co-authored the 2017 version of the E-commerce chapter in Sweet & Maxwell’s Encyclopedia of Information Technology Law.

My particular interest concerns the legal, ethical and social implications of the expanding use of artificial intelligence. I am a member of the cross-disciplinary University of Westminster L@wTech Hub, analysing various aspects of AI.

Having previously lived in China, I have a basic understanding of Mandarin and Hakka.

Outside the office, I enjoy reading comics / graphic novels and spend the rest of my time taming two small children.
