We are pleased to be co-hosting this event with the HR Retail Circle.
Brexit has created significant uncertainties, but also potential opportunities. Fears over a "bonfire of rights" appear to have abated, with Prime Minister Theresa May suggesting that we may even see a strengthening of worker rights, with representation at Board level. However, many areas remain unclear including the future status of EU workers in the UK. Even if resident EU workers are guaranteed the right to stay and work in the UK, the much trumpeted "points based" system is unlikely to cover lower paid roles in retail, and so we are likely to see greater pressures in future recruitment and retention and, potentially, increases to the overall wage bill.
What is clear is that HR will have a leading role to play in any retail business in navigating it through these unchartered waters? Brexit is clearly the main item of any Board agenda. But we also have further increases in the National Living Wage and the introduction of the apprenticeship levy in April 2017. And if workers are to be represented at Board level, why not HR?
