The introduction of the Modern Slavery Act 2015 presents risks and opportunities for businesses operating in the UK. In today's global economy a company's reputation is vital to its success. Demonstrating a pro-active interest in the wellbeing of workers, whether directly engaged or part of the supply chain, is a vital part of building a positive, ethical reputation.
Under the transparency provisions of the new Act, certain businesses must prepare and publish an annual slavery and human trafficking statement. This statement must reveal the steps an organisation has taken to ensure that slavery and human trafficking is not taking place in its business and in its supply chains both in the UK and globally. The requirements are likely to be pushed down the supply chain to all organisations supplying to larger businesses.
Fieldfisher will examine how General Counsel, Heads of Legal, Compliance, Procurement and HR can help their Board of Directors navigate the risks posed by the Act and emerge as ethical leaders.
