UK Government responds to EU Consultation on internet speed and quality beyond 2020 by covering, regulation for platforms, online intermediaries and data and cloud computing.

On 15 January 2016, the UK government released a response to the European Commission's Consultation on Internet Speed and Quality beyond 2020. Currently, as part of Europe's digital agenda, the main aim is to ensure every home in the EU is able to access a "superfast" broadband connection by 2020. The EU consultation considered the aims beyond 2020 and the UK has responded that "what matters most is the overall quality experience enjoyed by the user, and not just the speed". It covered the regulatory environment for platforms, online intermediaries, data and cloud computing and the collaborative economy. The UK proposed that speed should be delivered by copper networks and cable and that satellite capability is likely to be used in more remote areas. The response went on to outline the UK's strong reliance on a range of technologies and the importance for regulation to ensure technological neutrality and encourage private investment.
