Fieldfisher grows regulatory capability with energy sector team

Field Fisher Waterhouse LLP announces today the appointment of a three-lawyer regulatory team headed by partner David Haverbeke

David, who specialises in the Energy & Utilities sectors, joins the firm's Brussels office from Lydian where he was head of the energy practice. He will be joined by associates, Wouter Vandorpe and Cathy Suykens.

David and his team advise an international as well as a domestic client base active in the energy sector. The team advises clients that include electricity, gas and oil companies on regulatory matters, energy contracts and projects, transmission rights and relevant legislation. The team also advises on renewable projects in wind, wave and solar and provides strategic advice on permit applications and renewals. This team is one of the few in Belgium to do so.

David has a leading reputation in the sector and contributed to the drafting of federal and regional Belgian legislation relating to energy and related sectors (water and waste). He also handles commercial litigation, arbitration and proceedings before administrative tribunals.

The Energy and Natural Resources sector is an important element of the firm's focus on highly regulated and IP and technology driven industries. David and his team's expertise in this area will strengthen the firm's offering both in Brussels and the firm's pan-European Energy & Natural Resources Group.

The appointment closely follows the hire of Mauzima Bhamji in London's Competition & EU Regulatory Group who also specialises in the Energy & Natural Resources sector.  Mauzima was a senior legal adviser at Ofgem.

Eric Cusas, Managing Partner of Fieldfisher's Brussels office said: “I am pleased to welcome David, Wouter and Cathy to the firm. Their expertise advising companies in the energy sector is an important addition to our Europe-wide capability in this area and their regulatory practice adds a new specialism to Brussels' already well-regarded Public & Regulatory practice."

Charles Whiddington, head of Fieldfisher's Competition & EU Regulatory Group said: "David and his team have an excellent reputation for their regulatory work in the energy sector and their appointments, along with other hires such as that of Mauzima Bhamji in London, strengthen the regulatory expertise we can offer our clients in the sector."
