European law firm Fieldfisher has added a new partner to the firm's Financial Services Regulatory practice.

Azad Ali was most recently counsel in the Financial Institutions Advisory & Financial Regulatory Group at Shearman & Sterling, having been at the firm since 2005.

Azad specialises in advising clients on UK and EU regulatory matters across a wide range of regulated sectors, working with banks, broker-dealers, infrastructure providers, many buy-side participants and regulated financial businesses generally. He has significant experience in many regulatory areas subject of significant focus as a result of the financial crisis including bank capital and structural reform, bank resolutions, remuneration,  trading/clearing/settlement and derivatives regulation. He advises on the implementation and impact of reforms such as Basel III/CRD IV, MiFID II, EMIR, BRRD, AIFMD, Solvency II, SFTR, CSDR and shadow banking among others. Azad has played a central role on many recent notable transactions in the banking and market infrastructure space, for example, several of which have been recognised in industry awards.

Speaking of his move, Azad Ali said: "Fieldfisher's financial services business is very well placed for growth: it is strong in derivatives, banking, asset management and technology and I see the firm as a good fit for the expected growth and development of wholesale financial markets and market infrastructure; areas I have focused on for many years. I'm looking forward to contributing to the success of Fieldfisher."

Guy Usher, partner and head of Fieldfisher's Derivatives & Structured Finance Group, said: "Azad's extensive range and depth of expertise is well known in our markets, which are in the midst of significant change. I am very pleased that Azad has taken the opportunity to join Fieldfisher, significantly bolstering our Financial Services Regulatory practice."

Kirstene Baillie, partner and head of Fieldfisher's Financial Services Group, said: "We are always looking for good opportunities to enhance the strength and depth of Fieldfisher's financial services offering. Increasing regulation of the markets has led us to further build expertise in that space, and Azad's arrival represents an important strategic recruitment in anticipation of the growing level of work in that area."

Azad started at Fieldfisher on 1st February 2016.
