Action for Brain Injury Week 2015

Headway have launched Action for Brain Injury Week 2015, and in tandem with this have published the first datasets on acquired brain injury which show some worrying trends. Although men are 1.6 times more likely to get an acquired head injury than women, the number of hospital admissions for head injuries has risen for women by 24% since 2005-06.

On a wider scale, there were 348,934 hospital admissions for acquitted brain injury in 2013-14, and in general ABI admissions have increased by 10% since 2005-06.

On average in the UK, according to Headway figures:

  • Someone is admitted to hospital every 90 seconds with an acquired brain injury
  • Someone is admitted to hospital every 3 minutes with a head injury
  • Someone is admitted to hospital every 4 minutes with a stroke

Further to this Headway have a fundraising event this coming Friday 29th May – Hats for Headway Day – in which participants can raise money for Headway by wearing a hat in return for a donation. You can follow this and other events on Twitter using the #ABIweek hashtag.
