As a result, SK suffered multiple severe injuries including: bilateral haemothoraces, right orbital floor fracture, multiple rib fractures, fractures to her spine, a spinal cord injury and extensive scarring to her body. She also suffered a psychiatric injury.
The claimant remained in hospital for two months and underwent spinal fixation and insertion of a titanium plate to the right orbital floor.
She had been studying at university at the time of the collision and was forced to take two years out of her studies, spending 18 months at home with her family in Hong Kong to recover.
The defendant admitted liability in 2015, however quantifying the claim was complicated due to the crossover between care in the UK and Hong Kong. Numerous experts in both countries were involved in the claim to consider the SK's future prognosis.
When she returned to the UK, and while the claim was ongoing, SK completed her studies and achieved a 2:2 degree.
SK's injuries continue to impact her social life, including affecting her mobility, social activities and hobbies, heavier domestic tasks and relationships. She suffers bowel and urinary urgency, persistent pains and cramping in her left leg. She continues to suffer from double vision, disrupted sleep and prognosis physically is for deterioration in her 50's and beyond.
Following settlement, SK returned to Hong Kong. She said:
