Manchester City Council pay damages for labourer

Tony Kennedy worked as a labourer in the cleansing department for Manchester City Council during the 1960s, mainly around the Barton and Carrington Moss areas.

His job involved maintaining council premises and commercial properties. Tony was exposed to asbestos assisting bricklayers relining chimneys, which involved removing damaged asbestos sheeting and repairing corrugated asbestos roofing. He also assisted electricians involved with rewiring and crawled through roof spaces containing asbestos lagging.

Sadly, Tony was diagnosed with mesothelioma and underwent chemotherapy.

The claim against the Council was denied until we issued court proceedings. We were able to take advantage of a special procedure for mesothelioma claims and successfully secured liability against them at an early hearing before trial. The claim settled quickly thereafter with the defendants accepting our suggested offer of £125,000.
