Pharmacists should prescribe, Varadkar tells conference

Minister for Health Leo Vradkar, spoke at a recent Community Pharmacists Conference where he stated “he was keen to see Irish pharmacists prescribing medicines”. For a number of years, pharmacists in other countries have been allowed to prescribe medication and the Minister felt that introducing the practice in a hospital setting first, would avoid any initial conflict of interest in the sale and prescription of drugs. Minister for Health Leo Vradkar, spoke at a recent Community Pharmacists Conference where he stated “he was keen to see Irish pharmacists prescribing medicines”. For a number of years, pharmacists in other countries have been allowed to prescribe medication and the Minister felt that introducing the practice in a hospital setting first, would avoid any initial conflict of interest in the sale and prescription of drugs. It is not expected that such a scheme would be implemented in the lifetime of this government as it would require a change in legislation .
