Fieldfisher has been a trusted adviser to the public sector for more than 30 years. We are a genuinely creative advisory team, not gimmicky or flash, and we provide fresh and original solutions to our clients’ challenges. That is why public bodies come to us when they need advice on cutting-edge and mission-critical projects, and when they need an imaginative approach in the context of a deep understanding of public sector values and issues.
We set great store by working with, not just for, our clients. Partly this is about our personal attitudes – clients tell us we are “professional, easy going and very approachable". But it is also about good project and attentive service management – one client said that we "yet again excelled in helping to conclude some particularly challenging procurements on time and on budget".
We advise a wide range of government departments and agencies, local authorities, regulatory bodies, Royal Charter bodies and non-departmental public bodies. We deploy our deep expertise to support these clients through transformations in their ways of working. Our services include developing new commercial models to deliver more effective services, maximising the benefits and dynamism of public service mutuals, moving from large single supplier arrangements to multi-sourcing to obtain value for money, and using cloud-based services to enhance service delivery.
If you are in the public sector, we can help with all your legal needs, including corporate and commercial, employment and pensions, technology and telecommunications, real estate, public procurement, EU/UK competition and State Aid, public and regulatory law, intellectual property, dispute resolution and data protection issues.
Notable deals / highlights
- We advised the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority on the highest value civil public procurement in Europe – the Sellafield nuclear decommissioning contracts. This was described by the Office of Government Commerce as “pioneering the way forward in competitive dialogue”. Fieldfisher won "Commercial team of the year" at the British Legal Awards 2009 for our work on this project.
- We successfully advised the Home Office and the Identity and Passport Service (now HM Passport Office) on all aspects of the establishment of the £4.5 billion National Identity Scheme, a project that was recognised by the Office of Government Commerce as a 'beacon of excellence' and which introduced a number of new and innovative contracting tools and techniques.
- We have advised the Cabinet Office on a suite of high profile projects, including the establishment of Big Society Capital, the development of the National Citizen Service, the spinout of the BehaviouralInsights Team into a public-private joint venture and delivery of the ISSC2 shared service centre project.
- We are advising on the very complex pensions aspects of the re-letting of the contract to run National Savings & Investments. This involves second generation transfers of public sector workers, with added planning due to government reforms of the underlying pension schemes and the Fair Deal protection given to staff.
