I am a leading expert in competition law and public procurement law. I am dually qualified in New York and the UK, with almost 30 years' international experience advising businesses in the field. I founded our competition, regulatory and trade group and lead our regulatory department across the Firm.
I have a particular expertise in assisting companies with competition issues in regulated sectors, like energy, water, transport and life sciences. I have also built the team's special reputation in supporting companies involved in cartel investigations. We successfully defended ANA in the air cargo investigation and subsequent damages claims and are currently advising in nine major cases in which we are coordinating defences across the globe.
In the regulatory arena, I successfully brought proceedings against the Belgian State for tax discrimination on behalf of the Great Ormond Street Hospital in a landmark case which established a number of fundamental principles across the EU in the field of charities: recognition of Anglo-Saxon trusts and charities on the Continent; bequests and legacies as capital and therefore entitled to the free movement principles under the EU Treaty; equal tax treatment as domestic bequests.
I was voted UK Competition Lawyer of the Year 2012 in the Client Choice Awards. I am named as a leading competition lawyer in Chambers Directory and Legal 500 2013 refers to me as 'commended for his analytical skills and international approach to cartel cases'. Chambers 2013 describes me as 'a lawyer instructed for his 'user-friendly' expertise in all aspects of competition law. His recent work has demonstrated his strength in a wide range of areas, including cartel investigations and damages actions'.
My professional memberships include the ABA, the IBA, the Competition Law Association. I have spoken and written widely, teach on a Cambridge University MBE post-graduate programme and I have authored or co-authored a number of books, including a book on UK competition law.
In my spare time, I love music, Italy, golf, my family and our dog.
