Claudio Mereu, Partner, Competition and EU Regulatory
I am a partner in our Brussels office and head up the firms EU & regulatory group and life sciences group.
My expertise focus on European Union law, with an emphasis on the chemicals (REACH), pesticides, biocides and life sciences industry sectors, as well as other regulated industries including medical devices, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, toys, electrical and electronic equipment, and fuel additives (including devising lobbying strategies and general compliance issues).
I handle product approval processes in the EU, related litigation before European courts, national courts and WTO panels, and counsels companies on a wide range of business law and antitrust matters relating to their international agreements and commercial presence in Europe.
My expertise covers all aspects of product regulations and restrictions (including notification, data protection, mutual recognition, classification & labelling, marketing and use restrictions, parallel imports, environmental liability, product recalls and data compensation negotiations, amongst others).
I advise life sciences clients on the importation, regulation and sale of medical devices, pharmaceuticals, GMOs, novel food, food supplements and food contact materials.
I represent chemical companies before the European Institutions, Member State authorities, Scientific Committees, and the European Courts. I was involved in the first case of data sharing arbitration in Italy and in a case of alleged abuse of dominant position on pesticides markets, both of which I successfully resolved.
I regularly speak at international conferences as an expert speaker and panellist on pesticides and chemicals and am highly recommended by Legal 500, Chambers Europe and the Life Sciences Industry Report.
I have contributed to a number of publications, including most recently the "Schizophrenic stakes of GMO Regulation in the European Union" (EJRR, 2012/02, p. 202-211) and "Reports: Biotechnology: On the new European Regulation on Plant Protection Products" (EJRR 2011/4, p. 553-556).
I am fluent in English, French, Spanish and Italian.
