Jonathan Hofstetter, Partner, Dispute Resolution
I have particular expertise in technical and engineering disputes, arbitration, and mediation. I have also developed a specialism in bringing and defending competition follow-on damages claims, which usually arise following EU-wide cartel decisions.
I have been involved in many high profile cases for a large range of international corporate clients in the manufacturing, IT, energy and engineering sectors. I have recently represented clients in two high profile Supreme Court cases, and undertaken ICC, LCIA and UNCITRAL arbitrations, such as those arising out of the Exxon-owned natural gas storage platform in the Adriatic and the construction of the gas pipeline between Germany and Russia. I am presently helping a Swedish company challenge a European directive in order to lift a ban on its products, as well preparing follow-on damages cases generated by the trucks and automotive bearings cartels.
I am recognised by Legal 500 as a leading disputes resolution lawyer and I am (it is said!) a “joy to work with”, an “astute tactician” and “extremely knowledgeable”.
I have extensive experience of working with non-UK clients and I take very seriously the importance of ensuring that those clients engage on an even footing with the UK and its legal system.
I have spoken at many industry and client events, including recently at the French engineering association in Paris. I am a member of the Competition Appeal Tribunal working party which represents the interests of court users.
I speak fluent French (I have dual Swiss and British nationality); conversational Italian; and have basic German and Polish
My interests include tennis, art and art review, history, horticulture and film.
