Hastings Guise, Partner, IP and Technology, Protection and Enforcement
I love achieving the right result – whether that is a legal win, a great settlement or simply a solid and cost-effective protection strategy for my clients' brands and designs.
Most of my work involves disputes relating to the validity or co-existence of European Union Trade Marks and Registered Community Designs. I also advise on clearance and launch risks for new brands, plan and co-ordinate filing programmes around the world and manage existing portfolios of registered rights.
I act for a diverse range of clients in sectors including retail, pharmaceuticals, fashion, media and financial services. In a recent success for a leading international footwear business, I defended our client's 3D European Union Trade Mark against invalidity proceedings brought by a major European retailer. In 2014 I acted before the European Union Intellectual Property Office successfully in a large number of disputes relating to Registered Community Designs and also advised on trade mark clearance for well over a hundred proposed new brands, primarily in the pharmaceutical and retail sectors.
I am dual-qualified as a solicitor (England & Wales) and a registered UK trade mark attorney. I have written for a number of publications including World Trademark Review and have lectured on branding and trade marks for the Cambridge Master of Bioscience Enterprise program. I also speak good Italian.
When I'm not working, I love spending time with my family, playing the guitar and exploring obscure videogames that no one else has heard of.
