Christopher Eastham, Senior Associate, Technology, Outsourcing and Privacy, Fieldfisher

I am a specialist technology lawyer with extensive experience in advising a variety of tech sector clients on particular issues arising out of the development, acquisition, exploitation, and disposal of technology and intellectual property.

I have a particular interest in technology-centric sectors (such as telecommunications and broadcasting).  For example, I provided front line support in relation to the development and launch of the ground-breaking 'Freeview Play' television platform, expanding the Freeview offering to include internet protocol television functionality in addition to digital terrestrial television services.

I recently advised a mobile virtual network operator on the regulatory implications of 'over the top' internet television broadcasting, and provided guidance to a network software provider on the development and testing of a new LTE 4G network, in particular regarding the regulatory and licensing requirements of network operation in the UK.  I also recently negotiated, on behalf of a software engineering company, a strategic commercial partnership with a global decorative paints manufacturer for the development of cutting-edge mobile augmented reality technology.

I have expertise in IT and outsourcing (advising a globally-recognised defence contractor in relation to the UK's nuclear submarine programme); software and data licensing (negotiating a framework for the provision of electronic textbooks to university students via various platforms); and sponsorship arrangements (leading the negotiation of the multi-million pound title sponsorship of the RBS Six Nations Rugby Championship).

In addition to key strategic projects, I also assist clients in improving their processes and protecting their businesses on a day-to-day basis, for example, conducting a wide-ranging intellectual property audit for a leading name in oil and gas research and consultancy to identify risks and provide recommendations as to protecting and exploiting its key knowledge capital.

I have experience of working very closely with clients, having been seconded to the in-house legal team of an international financial institution during 2012, and more recently to a global consumer goods manufacturer in 2013/4.  My in-house experience provided valuable insight into delivering quality and timely legal support to clients within business and procurement functions.

I have a technical background, holding a first class Master's degree in Physics with Space Science and Technology (MPhys), in addition to my first class Bachelor's degree in Law (LLB).

In my spare time I coach the Olympic sport of fencing, and enjoy scuba diving.
