John Cassels, Partner, Competition, Regulatory and Trade
I am a lawyer who listens to his clients so that I understand their business and their commercial objectives. I advise on all aspects of EU and UK competition law (including, cartel investigations, antitrust litigation, restrictive agreements, dominance issues, alliances, and structural changes such as mergers and acquisitions), public procurement, state aid, international trade and regulatory matters. My advice is practical and commercial. It focuses on the assessment and allocation of competition and regulatory risk.
I have worked with clients across a very broad range of industries from water and wastewater to soft drinks. I have particular expertise in regulated sectors, including food, transport, life sciences and financial/professional services, where the interplay between regulatory and antitrust interventions can give rise to complex and sometimes contradictory incentives.
I have advised on many high profile and complex competition, state aid and EU regulatory matters including international cartels and compliance management for airlines and technology companies, the merger control aspects of the creation of GlaxoSmithKline and ReckittBenckiser, managing EU distribution and reselling arrangements for suppliers of branded goods, regulatory issues for major food and food supplement manufacturers, and dumping complaints. Clients have told me that they value my no nonsense approach: feedback on one of my workshop events from general counsel of a major PLC is that it was "the first such law firm event I have been to that has actually been of practical value". Legal 500 notes that I am 'very astute, approachable and adaptable'.
I have a First Class Honours Degree in Law from the University of Glasgow (Scotland) and a Masters in Law and Economics (Distinction) from the University of Rotterdam (The Netherlands). I love what I do at my desk and on my bike.
