Mauzima Bhamji, Director (New Zealand qualified), Competition, Regulatory and Trade
I advise on all aspects of competition law, international trade, EU and national regulation (especially in the field of energy, communications, health, and education).
As an EU regulatory specialist, I provide practical advice on current, pending and proposed regulatory issues.
I have over 12 years' experience with top regulatory bodies such as Ofgem and Ofcom and various bodies including the regulator, in New Zealand. I have advised central government departments and independent regulators.
I have worked on several cases before the European Courts, and the Supreme Court, on high profile decisions (e.g. the acquisition of Sky by News Corporation), new energy regulatory activities (e.g. smart meters), competition investigations and the film Lord of the Rings.
Having worked as an in-house lawyer for regulators, I have a better understanding of the approach and priorities of competition and regulatory officials, policymakers and enforcers. Clients value my clear and practical advice, and in-depth understanding of the regulatory landscape.
Since joining the firm, I have worked with a number of companies affected by EU and GB regulation, including energy producers, interconnectors, distributors and suppliers, mobile network operators, education providers and regulators, investment firms and technology companies.
I have a Masters in EU and European Public Law (Merit) from University College London, an Honours degree in Law from University of Waikato (New Zealand) and a Bachelor in Economics degree from University of Auckland (New Zealand).
I love my work, especially the mental gymnastics of thinking through issues and finding practical solutions.
