Continuing convergence, the shift from e-commerce to the mobile device, Europe’s Digital Agenda, the changing needs of law enforcement agencies and the threats to security of networks, services and data are delivering new challenges and opportunities for the payments industry. This has a direct impact on the kinds of legal support that our clients require now and in the future.

Our core focus on the TMT and financial services sectors gives us deep insight into the dynamics and often complex challenges faced by our clients when it comes to the mission-critical use of technology in financial services. As a result, we are recognised in Chambers 2013 as being "prominent in matters at the frontiers of digital technology, such as mobile banking and payments".

Members of our Payments and Cards Group have acted for a variety of financial institutions, mobile network operators, online and high street retailers and service providers, ISPs and regulatory bodies. We advise on cards and digital payments transactions, including the establishment of mobile wallets, money remittance via mobile devices, contactless payments, cash-in-transit and ATM services, merchant acquiring, dynamic currency conversion and related payments infrastructure advice. We can help with regulatory questions surrounding authorisation and the availability of exemptions under payment services and e-money legislation, including structuring business models for new products and businesses to ensure compliance. We also assist with the impact of competition and regulatory issues, and new EU and UK legislation.
