Settlement for devoted husband who died from mesothelioma

Mr K developed asbestos-related cancer, having been exposed while working as a painter and decorator for Jenner Bros in Ilford during the 1960s. He was required to rub down asbestos cement gutters, soffit boards and fascias on properties owned by Tower Hamlets and Stratford Borough Councils. He was never warned about the dangers, or provided with protective equipment.

Before becoming ill, Mr K had been very fit and active. He was extremely skilled around the home and garden, and, at the age of 75, was still enjoying work. Sadly, the decline in his health was shockingly swift, and he survived only two months after being given the diagnosis of mesothelioma, spending most of that time in hospital. Despite being very ill, he bravely managed to provide a clear account of his occupational asbestos exposure, enabling us to continue a claim after his death.

Although she was clear that compensation was by no means a priority, a successful settlement has at least provided his widow with a certain amount of financial security, and the comfort of an acknowledgment that her husband should not have died of such a devastating disease.
